Gap Year - learn a language

Make your fun gap year a valuable investment in your future by practicing your language skills or learning a new one. There are two ways to practice or learn a new language during your gap year with Lingoo: on an exchange program or on a homestay abroad.

With an exchange program live with local families for free in amazing places, experience new lifestyles and immerse yourself in another culture and language.

A homestay abroad is a chance to practice your language skills intensively with a native speaker host family or teacher during a full immersion gap year stay for a fee that includes accommodation, authentic meals and an insider view of the culture.

Why a student exchange program?

The educational and cultural enrichment offered by a foreign exchange program is second to none. The thousands of young people who take part in a student exchange program each year say they have the time of their lives. They see the world from a new perspective, gain understanding of a new culture, and their host family becomes their ‘second family’ as lifelong friendships and bonds are formed.

The language learning opportunities are rich too. Because you’re practising all day, learning new things, and sharing every day activities in your target language, you learn faster and without realising how much you’ve learned.

The Lingoo student exchange program has helped thousands of young people take the next step towards language fluency and maturity. Read more about joining Lingoo.

Plan a homestay abroad

Language learners can also book homestays abroad with a host family or book a stay in the home of a teacher for more formal, structured lessons.

On a homestay, you eat, sleep and breathe the language in the community where it is spoken every day. Choose where you stay, when, and for how long. Before you book, see pictures of host families and teachers and their homes in detailed online profiles, read reviews from previous guests, and contact hosts to get to know them.

Living with a host family or teacher in that community helps you learn faster than you would in a classroom. Click here to read more about a homestay abroad.
