"My wife and I are semi retired. We have had three sons and two foster daughters, all have grown up and have families of their own. We live in a small village about 3 miles outside the historic market town of Dorking; which has a good selection of shops and sports facilities. It also has a mainline station with trains to either Waterloo or Victoria.
I was an International employee of an oil exploration company in charge of a department and have lived in other countries, i.e.France, Norway, Turkey and Ireland. We have hosted foreign students for about 12 years and now as a semi-retired person; I am able to teach English as well. I have worked part-time as a house tutor at a local boarding school for 18 years and now just work at the school one evening every week.
My wife and I enjoy meeting foreign students and socialising with them. We are happy to engage in as much general conversation outside of lessons as the student wishes. we are happy playing card games, table tennis, pool and if the student is interested - playing tennis at our club. We also enjoy accompanying them on cultural visits to London and to other places outside the capital such as Hampton Court, Windsor Castle, Arundel Castle and Brighton.
I graduated with a Batchelor of Arts degree in 1975 and have recently completed a post-graduate course in TESOL and a specialised One-to -One TESOL course.
My approach to teaching would be to carry out a thorough 'needs analysis' for the student and would plan a course that concentrates on the student's requirements and where possible featuring the student's specific interests or hobbies. I would give the student an outline weekly plan, but maintain a flexible approach in reacting to the student's performance. Feedback would be given at the end of every session using the'hamburger' approach and the use of 'feedback sheets' that the student can study in their own time. At the end of the stay; I would give the student more formal feedback on the achievements relative to the requirements and suggestions as to what should be practised in order to maintain success and progress further. I would attempt to plan a balance between ; reading, writing, speaking and listening, but staying flexible in relation to the student's own requirements. I am happy to use a variety of teaching aids, e.g audio recording and videos etc. The lessons are included in the hosting price and cover lessons upto 3 hours per day.
