What Is Communicative Language Teaching?

Think back to how you learned your first language. You didn’t sit there memorising vocabulary and verb tables - you chatted, copied those around you and experimented until it clicked.

This is why Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) works so well. Because it prioritises real communication over memorisation, allowing learners to focus on actually using the language.

Instead of drilling grammar, it’s all about meaningful exchanges and connections. Making it the perfect teaching style for language homestays, where natural conversation is part of daily life.

What Is Communicative Language Teaching?

Put simply, CLT focuses on using the language rather than just studying it. Learners practice their target language through real interactions such as telling stories, sharing opinions and making plans.

For example, instead of just memorising the word “hungry” in isolation, a learner might practice the phrase “I’m really hungry, what should we make for dinner?” That way they are picking up the vocabulary, grammar and everyday expression all in one go.

That’s the communicative approach to language teaching - learning language the way people actually use it.

The Pros and Cons of CLT

Like any method, Communicative Language Teaching has its advantages and disadvantages.

Here’s why it works:

  • - Boosts fluency and confidence quickly
  • - Mirrors real-life communication
  • - Keeps learners motivated with practical results

What to watch out for:

  • - Grammar accuracy can get overlooked

  • Total beginners sometimes benefit from more structure

  • - The space must be safe and encouraging to experiment in

In short, Communicative Language Teaching is brilliant for overall fluency and learner enjoyment. But it does work best alongside some traditional language study.

How Hosts and Tutors Can Apply CLT

You absolutely do not need to be a qualified teacher to use the communicative approach to language teaching. In fact homestay hosts are often in the best position to make it work most effectively.

  1. Keep Conversations Natural

Ask open ended questions, share your thoughts, or simply chat about weekend plans. Whilst it may just be a regular part of your day, just 20 minutes of conversation over breakfast can be one of the most effective language lessons for learners.

  1. Add Purpose To Interaction

Language sticks when there is a reason to remember what is being learnt. So things like giving instructions on how to use the washing machine or discussing directions for how to get somewhere are simply far more memorable than repeating a phrase from a textbook.

  1. Do Activities Together

Playing games, whether that be board games or team sports, are excellent activities for Communicative Language Teaching. You could also create a shopping list together and go shopping, follow a recipe to cook dinner together or discuss an article in the newspaper.

Why Immersion Is The Ideal Setting

The beauty of Communicative Language Teaching is that it doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective, and chances are you’re already using many of the techniques in everyday life without even realising it.

What makes immersive homestays so powerful is the safe, supportive atmosphere they create. So with the combination of CLT and learners feeling comfortable in your home, they stop worrying about mistakes and natural conversation flows.
